The Power of Words Essay Example for Free

The Power of Words EssayFor those of you who like to cr obliteratee, you know that you are never fully satisfied with what you produce. Sure it may get the grade or suffice for what you planned to accomplish, except the thoughts circling what you could have d iodine differently or ways you could improve toilet grow in the back of your mind. Maybe after investing great measures of effort and time, you are Doneby the time youre through dont want to think about it, tho want to move on. scarcely maybe you go back, and go back, and go back, and cant stop dwelling on things you could do or careen to make whatever you made/produced/created homophileifest the ideas in your mind in a more accurate way.Well, that is how I feel about what I write. Since advent home for the summer, Ive revisited old papers and essays for further refinement and fine tweaking just because I think its fun (and because Im a perfectionist, whoops). So some of the essays I post are more loved and tended to than others, but today I am posting the first essay I wrote for the Nonfiction Writing class I took this past spring at KU. Its come a long way since hence, and Im current I will pay it a visit again in a few weeks or months and mix things around yet again. One day I love it and am happy with the progress Ive made, and another day I am frustrated by my inability to express on the button what I want how I want. plainly thats just the way it is, I suppose so all that to say, here are some thoughts on the power of speech communication, which just so happens to be the clever title of my essay. Boom. Feedback welcomeThe Power of WordsThe tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit. -Proverbs 1821Long before I began, lecture existed. scour in my infancy, I babbled indistinct jargon to empty air. As a toddler, my parents wheel spoke to me and urged me onward as I struggled to coerce meaning into form. With great exertion, I studied the shape of their mouths and attempted to recreate the sounds myself. Through practice, frustration, and failure, I learned run-in.But after nearly two decades of befriending in the raw words, there are still words left unlearnt. Each new introduction excites, confounds, and embarrasses me all in one breath. When I shy away, they beckon me to under affiliation. Thankfully, the words are gracious to those who delight in their discovery. I live to encounter them to be empowered by them. However, I have failed to remember this until just now, and this fresh remembrance peels the scab of a wound Ive left untreated for far too long.No core of stitches could seal up this wound. My hands wrung together, willing the searing fire to subside, willing to forget the sting of the blade. But the penetration of a double-edged sword permits no man to walk away unscathed. I am no exception. The memory of my injury echoed and swelled in my mind, piercing me deeper and fiercer with each remembrance. Any compl iment offered to me was like putting a cold compress on the head of a patient in need of heart surgery a kind gesture, but fair at best. No earthly remedy can heal the wound caused by a rash remark, a reckless word, a biting tongue. The words reverberated, transcending both time and space, tossing a pinch of salt into the festering puss with each visit. In one blazing breath, the levee was breached. Insecurities gushed forth from moments past to moments present. The words washed over me again and again and again, throbbing to the rhythm of a familiar pulse. Worthless. Ugly. Insufficient. Outcast. The faces of the ones who introduced me to these words flooded my mind. The playground bully, the jealous friend, the past love interest, the inconsiderate schoolfellow one by one, their faces appeared and circled around me, each breathing their own kind of fire. They etched their scorching words onto my memory and my heart. Each recollection brought a new wave of hurt. Their flames engu lfed me and I stood defenseless. maybe these dragons were right about me. Perhaps I was what they said.My knees began to buckle beneath the weight of some sort of self-hatred or bitterness. But just before I collapsed to the cold kitchen tile, my mothers arms encircled me from behind and secured me in an embrace. Her hushed whispers traveled through my ear into my ache sides, tenderly dressing my wounds with honey. Gentle reassurances momentarily cooled the scorching fire which ravaged my thoughts. My mothers sweet lips massaged my burns as nourishing balm. Maybe I wasnt as worthless as they said. Though words have destroyed me, they have also restored me. But sometimes my scars whisper to me in the put of the night, reminding me, ushering me into the dragons lair where I am taunted by each rash remark, reckless word, or biting tongue that has ever wounded me.Even as a child, I understood the weight of words and the value in speaking responsibly. I remember shutting the door of m y fourth-grade classroom, double-taking to ensure no one was watching, and skipping along the empty hallway in search of the nearest drinking fountain. My eyes danced until they rested upon the rusted spigot. Suddenly, my innocent skip-to-my-lou developed into a nutcrackers march. I swung my arms and stomped my feet to the beat of a distant war drum, stifling giggles at my own theatrical display. I was hilarious, giddy, free. At last I lowered my lips, lightly twisted the nozzle, and felt the cool water trickle down the back of my throat. After several gulps, I straightened my back and my eyes zeroed in on a laminated poster taped to the wall. It portrayed a yell girl with her back turned from a group of laughing schoolchildren. My heart sunk as I read, Sticks and stones may break my bones but words can never hurt me.What a lie, I thought. Why else would the girl be crying if she was not hurt?Who wrote this?Though I stomped back to my classroom, it was not a giddy stomp as before. I felt indignant at the injustice done to the crying girl in the poster. Even as a fourth grader, I knew words were far more powerful weapons than measly sticks and pebbles. I unawares wished I was Mary Poppins and could leap inside the poster and watch the clip-art scene come to life. I would parade right towards the menacing pack of bullying children, stand on my tippiest-toes, and wag my finger in their mocking face. How could they not see the hurt they caused, the damage theyd done? The artist of this poster flippantly discharged the girls hurt dismissed my hurt. Obviously, he has never entered the dragons lair or perhaps, he has but is simply trying to forget. Perhaps he hopes that denying his injuries will ease the pain they bring. The very thought caused my own scars to burn. Rage pulsed through my body as I thought of the daggers digging deeper into the crying girls subconscious into my subconscious. Feeble. Pathetic. Weak. I could see the fire on the bullying childrens breath as their words melted into her ears. Though press down upon on all sides, her dragons bid her to stand strong as they prodded her with white-hot prongs and secured their perpetual mark. Ill bet her scars whisper to her at night, too.To dismiss a reckless remark is to remove responsibility. This flippancy severs the cord of accountability between speaker and speech. As the mediums of our messages transitioned from slabs of stone to paper to screen, the weight of a word addled its wonder. Consider the scribe. He pauses an ancient practice before dipping his pen into his jar of thick, black ink. Fully aware of the repercussions of an error, he painstakingly paints each stroke with precision. He lives in an age unacquainted with a backspace key and where few can afford the price of an error. But today, a text message mindlessly tapped out is just as soon deleted. Even this sentence was reconsidered, revisited, and revised. Our ability to communicate no longer springs from our dexterity of thought but the agility of our thumbs. Our words are no longer preserved in a weighty stone tablet. Instead, they are typed, deleted, and retyped in a two pound, portable tablet then launched into cyberspace to be received and deleted from an already cluttered inbox. But why not?We are entitled. We have rights.Does not every tweeted and retweeted thought deserve virtue merely in its right to be said? Is it politically correct to correct a politically incorrect statement? I never can tell. Our cry for the freedom of speech made passage for the freedom from speech and the careful tending that should accompany it. Our tongues run rampant never checked nor balanced. We pick out our right to speak, but our flapping mouths pay no heed to how we speak. Because an error or offensive slip of the tongue incurs only minimal if any cost, our words are many and close between.I fear I also am the rambling type. The filter between my head and my mouth is shorter than Id like to admit. Sometimes I wonder if I even have a filter or if it got lost somewhere long ago in some prattling speech. Maybe I forgot I have one and, thus, never use it. In any case, I discover amusement in weave the trail of my own thoughts and relaying my journey to others. I have never suffered from a scarcity of words. On the contrary, I am their abuser. I am apt to respond when spoken to and likely to speak until stopped. But the scribe towers over me, soliciting silence. If you love the words, you will treasure them, he cries. When words are many, error is not absent. Even a fool who holds his tongue seems wise for he at least holds the appearance of revering the sanctity of a word well said.Sticks and stones may break your bones, but words wield the power of life and death. One flippant remark on how one should eat cake turned nation against queen and then off came her head. By the power invested in one mans announcement, two lives are joined and beget more life still. On the twent y-second day of September, in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and sixty-two, a bearded, honest man issued a proclamation declaring that all persons held as slaves would be then, thenceforward, and forever free.A deceitful dictator once told a big enough lie so frequently that his followers ran camps where with the aim of direction the world to decipher beauty in piles of misshapen bodies. When Sophie Scholl spoke out against that lie and called German youth to cast off their cloaks of indifference, the dictator inhibit her once and for all. By the word of a King, a dream stretched over the expanse of history and cried for the equality of the emancipated. By the word of the King, dry bones come up from the grave and walked out of their tombs. The Word from the very beginning sighed that it was finished and up from the deep the dragon prince relinquished his keys. With reverence comes escape. At some point or another, I began to regard the words as my slaves. I made t hem toil on my behalf. Beneath my whip, they labored without rest. Though they were exhausted, I trafficked them through the night and forgot to fall in them breakfast in the morning. I believed their usefulness to me fulfilled their purpose. I considered them as nothing more than a spoken sound, a written conglomeration of lines and curves and dots, alert only to serve me the autonomous man, the benefactor and my appetites. But today I realized I will soon be dead be it in sixty years or in the morning and the words will live on without me just as they did before me for the word and the Word cannot die.

Digital Tools Used In Gojira And Godzilla Film Studies Essay

Digital Tools Used In Gojira And Godzilla Film Studies EssayHumans have been around for thousands of years. To solar day, many movies have been cookd base on stories and legends of influential people and life-changing events that were recorded in recital. Inspiration for the 1954 aim Gojira came about as a result of World War Two during the 20th century. The devastation brought on lacquer by the dickens nuclear bombs had inevitably raised a wide spread a struggleeness about nuclear weapons and its radioactive destruction (Ragone 2007).Both, Gojiras and Godzillas creation were linked to the nuclear bomb. With lineament to the 1998 film Godzilla, it can be seen that the creation of the terrible lizard was linked to French nuclear weapons interrogatory in the French Polynesia. Similarly in the Japanese context, Gojira was shown to be linked not only to the atomic bombs, but the hydrogen ones as intumesce. With the devastation of the two atomic bombs still fresh in the Japanese minds, further H-bomb tests were carried out near Japan and eventually, the radiation fallout directly reached on the Japanese fishing industry, ca using a sharp decline. With all these tragic events materializering within a short span of time, Gojira was concocted out as an incarnation of the war itself (Ragone 2007 pg. 35) as the producers wanted a real-world scenario that reflected the Japanese concerns that time.In order to motionively protray the nature of destruction caused in the films Gojira and Godzilla, visual effects became increasingly important as it was necessary to provide an acceptable take aim of realism for audiences who will be watching the film. Therefore, this led to the instruction and creation of different visual effect techniques. thusly with the advancements in technology, some older techniques were modified and re-developed accordingly. In this investigation, it will bring to light the common, yet contrasting comparisons of filmmaking between the analo gue and digital eras.2 slam Selection I will be comparing two parallel special effects sequences in both Gojira and Godzilla. A breakdown of this complex scene will be accompanied with a description of its technical aspects in laymans terms. The scenes involve the two animals going on a rampage through a major city at night causing massive damages. It also includes military forces trying to eliminate the dick. These two scenes were specifically chosen as I will like to highlight the core visual effects elements that can be found throughout the films.3 The CharacterIt was called Gojira, but was later cognise as Godzilla for the American audiences. (Godzilla, King of the Monsters 1998) In the 1954 Gojira, visual effects director Eiji Tsuburaya pioneered a technique called Suit-mation. The main reason for the introduction of Suit-mation was because of the need to complete the subscriber line within a short timespan (Ragone 2007). If stop-motion technique was used, it would have t aken them seven years to complete the film. The sheath was constructed mainly from hand-stirred latex and then refined subsequently. charge after refinements, the suit could only be worn for several minutes due to the unbearable heat and almost non-existent ventilation within. Due to its flexibility limitations and ugly weight, the first suit was scrapped as the mover inside could not even move. In certain scenes where only the legs of Gojira were filmed, the suit was cut into two and attached to suspenders, allowing the actor to be more(prenominal) comfortable while filming (Godzilla, Designing Godzilla featurette 2005).Figure Man in halved Gojira suitDevelopment on analogue visual effect techniques can be seen clearly in the 1998 Godzilla, when Tsuburayas technique of Suitmation was used. Tpeltinged professional puppeteers were hired for shots that needed more physical realism with the playthings that they were interacting with. Eventually, the Godzilla suit would be replace d with a CG Godzilla. Animatronics, a technique kindred to the Suitmation technique, was introduced. In this case, instead of Human actors in the creatures costumes, machines were used to replace them. This method allowed many close-up inter follow out shots which enabled a high level of realism (Aberly 1998).The suit was not absolutely presented as a guy-in-a-suit. Primitive visual effects were added to give Gojira a scarier feel. In the shot where Gojira was tearing up Tokyo and boasting its bright flashing hind fins, hundreds of cells were hand drawn frame by frame (Ryfle 1998). In several shots where Gojira was using its atomic breath, the creature was actually a hand puppet (Godzilla 2005).With much use for puppetry and animatronics, computer generated graphics still triumphed as the best tool for visual effects in the digital era. In addition, with the developments of computer animation software and techniques, realism took to a new height.Puppeteers whom took the role of Go jira would soon be replaced with computer animators sitting behind the desk. plot of ground the actor in the Gojira suit was acting for the scene, he would be filmed using a high speed camera at around 240 frames-per-second. The film would then be projected at 24 frames-per-second giving the feel of weight and size (Faller 2010). Using modern day tools to make Godzilla (1998) move, instead of barb a guy-in-a-suit at a high frame rate, Centropolis FX had Godzilla key-frame furbish upd in the computer. Due to the difficulty of animating such a huge creature, the team of animators grew from xii to sixty (Martin 1998). Subsequently, After many failed attempts of animating a proper walk cycle, the team managed to get the same feel of the high speed camera shots by animating Godzillas movement at a slower speed (Martin 1998).From using chicken wires and glued latex for the construction of the 1954 Gojira (Designing Godzilla featurette 2005), polygons and NURBS took over in the digital era. The Gojira suit was make by wrapping thin wires and bamboo with chicken wire. Cushions and fabric were also added for the actors comfort. Hand stirred latex was later applied onto the suit as cutis (Designing Godzilla featurette 2005). Even though CGI was of an advanced technology, there were still formatbacks. Modelers had to split up their work of digitizing the entire creature by manually using a dash to draw out every single mesh into the computer. Furthermore, the software was not double-dyed(a) and had its limitations. A Special Projects team was sent from Soft Image to troubleshoot problems encountered by the CGI crew (Aberly 1998).Ideally, Gojira was thought to have suffered burns and scars from the H-bomb test. The textures and the suit of Gojira were hand crafted by two people. Tireless hours were spent modeling the skin bumps by using latex and then gluing it onto the skin (Godzilla, Designing Godzilla featurette 2005). However in the modern day Godzilla, there was the technology of displacement mapping whereby the 3D geometry of Godzilla would be displaced using a texture map that contained details of the skin. With the model rendered out in different passes (Martin 1998), the process was more effective and also gave compositors more freedom in manipulating the image to create a realistic Godzilla.4 The Set As the two Godzillas enter the city and begin their trail of destruction, the set they were on had to look real. Although both movies used miniatures for filming, this special effects technique was inevitably developed and refined extensively due to technological advancements.4.1 Miniatures Miniatures for Gojira (1954) were make for use as a city scape. Tsuburaya had the miniatures construct mostly in the 1/25 scale, with the exception of the Diet building which was a 1/33 scale (Ragone 2007). With reference to the scale of the Gojira suit with the miniature set scale, it created an illusion of Gojiras large size. Buildings were mad e in a forced perspective method where buildings closer to the camera were built bigger and those at the horizon smaller. The sets were actually built on wooden platforms to allow cameramen to do low angle shots, making the buildings look even bigger (Ryfle 1998).Thin plaster and wood were used for the buildings framework. Elaborate planning of the citys construction included custom made streets that would create footprints when being stepped on. Plaster was poured over sawdust to create that effect (Ryfle 1998). Digital techniques such as CG effects animation helped the 1998 Godzilla in creating street cracks. With the help of Thomas Hollier, a senior technical director, street impact technology was created. This allowed a pipeline for a more effective way for animating pavements that would crack under Godzillas weight (Martin 1998).Miniatures were also widely used in the making of Godzilla (1998). Huge 1/24 size models were built to accommodate Godzillas path of destruction. Huge 1/10 models were also built for close-up shots. The buildings were much more detailed with some featuring plumbing and even desks. There were several miniature buildings that were reused from The Hudsucker Proxy and The Fifth Element. With this, a great amount of production time was salve as redesigning of the rest of the set was no longer required. Although both Godzilla movies incorporated miniatures, Godzilla (1998) added extensive digital compositing over its miniatures to give it more realism (Martin 1998).Techniques adopted for destroying the miniature buildings were much more sophisticated in the newer film. In the 1954 version, kerosene soaked rags were used to set the miniatures ablaze (Ragone 2007). For those that were to be destroyed by Gojiras fiery breath, explosives were set behind the buildings. Several buildings even had gasoline sprayed on them to make them burn more easily. For buildings that were supposed to be destroyed by physical contact, small cracks were mad e in those miniatures so that it would crumble in a more believable fashion when Gojira crushed it. It was a daunting task for the actor inside as he had to get it right on the first take as there was not enough budget and time for a rebuild (Ryfle 1998).In 1998, there were more types of pyrotechniques available and one such example would be the military type. Different methods were developed to be used on the different types of destruction. As Godzilla races through the city with its tail in free motion causing damages to buildings, cable pulls were attached to sandbags in the buildings interiors. When they were pulled, a trail of damage would occur as if Godzillas tail had swept through them. Mechanical rigs were also used to blast through a building with the CG Godzilla to be composited in later. The Chrysler Building in the scene which was destroyed by a misfire from the attack helicopters were very complex mechanical rigs. Right after the top floors exploded, it was orchestrate d to shift and settle down towards the camera (Aberly 1998). On the whole, miniature destruction could be choreographed with more control.Miniature vehicles were also used on the set for both films. The military elements used in the Gojira scene were tanks. Extensive pyrotechnical effects were used for the firing of the tank weapons. When the tank shells hit Gojira, blasts were created by wire rigged charges (Ryfle 1998). Comparing this to a similar scene in the 1998 movie, instead of tanks, CG Apache attack helicopters were used. Tracer fire, blasts including debris and smoke from the damage were all entirely computer generated. In addition of the rainwater and liberation effects which included the volumetric searchlights, RenderMan shaders were developed solely for the wet look of the helicopter. However, at the shot when Godzilla decides to lash out at the attacking military helicopters, a miniature was used. With creative ingenuity, a 1/8 scale model was made loaded with pyro technics and detonated (Martin 1998).4.2 Atmosphere To create the perfect terrorising atmosphere, Gojira (1954) was shot using a low-key lighting effect (Biodrowski 2007). This is because Low key lighting would create a darker toned picture with contrasting bright contours which is more suited for dramatic shots. The grainy cinematography would also feed an extra punch to the eerie effect throughout the film (Ryfle et al. 2007).With the advancements in technology, analogue methods would be ofttimes replaced by colour grading and compositing. In Godzilla (1998), instead of using a low-key effect to give the dramatic shots, the environment was given a CG rain touch up. This was a complicated scene where many effects animations were applied. Not only was computer generated imagery used, acquisition footage was also being recorded for the environments. From rain to shattering windows, these footages would later be composited at different scales to tie up the scene together with the CG Godzilla (Martin 1998).Lighting was a key element in creating the perfect environment. Real lights from orange and bluish street lamps had to be reflected onto the CG Godzilla. Due to location shots where real lights were aimed at buildings when Godzilla was supposed to be in the foreground, artists had to rotoscope out the real lights and animate the CG ones. More complications had arisen when Godzilla rampaged and took out the real street lamps. Firstly, lights from the real lamps had to be rotoscoped out. A CG lamp would then be created and animated to flip or be destroyed (Martin 1998). Although this entire sequence would seem small compared to the main character, it made the scene look believable.Another small detail to add on is the stationary cars from the live action footage that underwent rotoscoping when Godzilla stomped past them. Compositing artists had to create rotoscope mattes for the vehicles and animate their bounce by hand. The add-on of the camera shake at post-pr oduction level also helped with the realism (Martin 1998).5 The ConclusionIn my chosen scenes which depict the destructions from the streets of Tokyo to Manhattan, both Gojira and Godzilla held similar iconic symbolisms and metaphors. In the 1950s when Gojira was made, there were many underlying reasons for its creation. The focal point was the atomic bombs. Since Japan had directly experienced the impact of the bombs, it would have held a deep significance for them. To a certain extent, it was believed that without the two atomic bombs that were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Gojira would not have surfaced. Gojiras rampage through Tokyo would serve as a reminder of the recent devastating nuclear attack on Japan to the survivors of the atomic bombs as well as to the rest of the Japanese. Gojira also created awareness on new nuclear weapon testing and how our interference with Mother Nature might one day prove apocalyptic and leave a trail of death and devastation.Today, in the mo dern world context where technological advances are ever improving and as well as relative peace, Godzilla (1998) still carries the same essence as it did 44 years ago. With the threat of existing nuclear weapons and even deforestation which leads to international Warming, metaphorically, Godzilla still serves as a reminder and warning of an impending disaster if we do not change our ways. Iconically, Godzilla would be referred to as a present eschaton movie. From comparing the different special effects techniques that were used in 1954 to those used in 1998, one could see how the technology leap into the digital era made a big difference in improving film quality and the workflow efficiency of special effects artists. Even though gone were the days where analogue techniques such as filming in front of glass mattes were regarded as the modern methods of special effects, several analogue techniques are still considered relevant with the present world. The integration of both analogu e and digital effects proved to be a success in creating a hyper-real Godzilla. With the age of computers and constant development on digital techniques and tools, no one knows what the future might hold for us as special effects artists. However, like all foundations of buildings, the journey of training the history and methodology of analogue techniques should be deemed as equally important for future developments.6 BilbliographyBOOKSAberly, R., 1998. The universe is very vast

The universe is very vastThe Scale of the worldThe instauration is very vast. Many unanswered questions of life lay hidden to a lower place this place so unfamiliar to our society. This mysterious dark sky that we are floating in is supposedly immutablely expanding to no end. Is thither an molding? sanitary apparently there is no center to this expansion nor is there a fixed surpass we know of. Its just an overall expansion everywhere unify into one another and only getting vaster. Will it ever stop expanding, or is there constant velocity acting on things all over, due to gravitational pulls coming from everywhere? The Big Bang which is supposedly the cause of the world we live in today was no ordinary explosion. According to studies from Edwin Hubble in 1929, there is no centre of the universe. These are many a(prenominal) questions and statements that are yet to be answered and hike up investigated. We surrender come up with many assumptions in which many make sense b ut what is the truth behind all of this? Nuclear physics may sacrifice the answer to many of these questions. I find this event most interesting simply because of the endless conclusions we can come up with, and the counselling things have been left so unsolved intrigues me.The being is defiantly immense. res publica is a planet in a solar system that is in a galaxy that lies in the Universe. Could the universe be within something too? A Multiverse or an omniverse, so in this case scenario our universe is just one of many others although in English connotation Universe implies everything beyond. The Compact Oxford Dictionary defines the Universe as all existing matter and space considered as a whole the cosmos. We would like to be able to give the Universe a scale but in order to do so we would have to know the content of everything within it. Throughout history our society has come with many conclusions to picture to understand where and how we are situated in our solar syste m, in the galaxy and now in the universe. People used to think that the Earth was the centre of the Universe and that everything revolved around it. We were wrong. Earth and the other planets in our solar system revolve around the sun. We later deduced that the sun was the center of everything and that things revolved around it. at once again this was false. It turns out that there are many solar systems in our galaxy and many suns. We then thought that our galaxy was everything. As a leave alone we were wrong again, there are many other galaxies. All of these are wrong statements, we may still be wrong today. There are as many galaxies or even more in the Universe as there are stars in our own galaxy. There are even clusters of galaxies and clusters of clusters which are called Superclusters which make up the Universe. We would love to give the universe a scale but we can only determine the edge by what light beams have been able to travel past, thus the distance is calculated in time taken by a light dick. The extent of what we can see in the Universe would take 15billion years at light speed to reach that area. We see no further since light has not traveled that furthest yet.We off-key that the Universe is evermore expanding and over time different factors will affect things. Here is a graph that shows the scale of the Universe versus time. The graph shows three factors that supposedly contribute to the Universes expansion Constant Dark ability, Big RipBig Crunch is what scientists see as the expansion of the Universe and its fate. The curve determines in what way the Universe is expanding. If we look at the graph carefully it states that at the beginning of times, things were created by this mysterious Big Bang. Eventually these three components (Big Rip, Constant Dark Energy and Big Crunch) started to increase. The Universe was expanding (Big Crunch), the amount of dark energy was increasing and things were constantly being split into pieces, divide d and chopped due to the theory of Big Rip. Things have stayed this way till present time but eventually in the future scientists predict that due to this constant effect of the Big Rip the Universe would eventually collapse which is stated by the down curve of the Big Crunch. All in all scientists predict an eventual implosion of the entire Universe, due to its constant expansion which is supposedly being expanded by shreds of particles being ripped apart. Is there a definite scale to the Universe? We cannot tell but we assume that it is constantly expanding. I would have thought that we are under the illusion of this expansion and that it is simply that we cannot see further since light rays have not traveled that far for us to be able to see any further. My theory can be proven since the furthest we can see has taken a ray of light to travel all that distance since the big bang. What I believe is that there is something faster than the speed of light and the explosion of the Big B ang has brought things further away faster than a ray of light can travel. I believe that there is no existence over there but there is matter, atoms and particles. If I believe what scientist say I could assume that the distance of the Universe is 15billion light years. The distance a light ray has traveled since the Big Bang. This is feasible since the speed of light in Einsteins theory of relativity is only an axiom on which he basses the rest of his theory.BibliographyThe Distance Scale of the Universe. Green and Sustainable Supply Chain Management

putting surface and Sustain subject Supply Chain ManagementEnvironmental changes across the humanness study generated a movement to identify the ca phthisiss of world-wide warming and develop solutions to end it before it is too late. In an effort to achive this, many countries ar creating laws and regulations with the precise aim to reduce carbon emissions and greenhouse gas effect. The truth is that environmental change is upon us. Not only do we have climate problems but we are to a fault dealing with a resource depletion issue. With economies like India and China growing at double digit rates, the population of the world continues to grow creating shortages of many resources that we use to take for granted. Many consumers, stakeholders and creasees are becoming more involved in the growing green movement. Influenced by customer loyalty shifting towards environment totallyy favorable products, businesses are trying more and more to make their provision drawing strings gre ener by introducing sustainability strategies throughout their organizations and supplier relationships. The recent focus on sustainability has topiced in a growing have for integrating environmentally safe choices into interpret ambit spotment practices. The concept Green Sustainable Supply Chain Management GSCM offer be defined as the process of development environmentally friendly inputs and transforming them through change agents into outputs that drive out be reclaimed and re-used at the end of their lifecycle therefore, creating a sustainable leave stove. The whole idea of a sustainable supply chain is to reduce m itary values while benefactoring the environment.2. Sustainability and ProfitabilityA Green Sustainable Supply Chain integrates ecological meanss and supply chain management principles to identify the environmental impact of an organizations supply chain processes. Businesses are becoming certified(predicate) of the logical implicationance of this integr ation to enable a sustainable business strategy. Many are now seeking out solutions and guidance on how to implement a sustainable supply chain. A sustainable supply chain should not be only optimum for the organization, but also optimal in name of a limited environmental impact. The sustainable supply chain is no longer exclusively virtually green issues, but also about generating efficiencies and cost containment. As organizations restructure to reduce their familiaritys environmental footfall, supply chains have become a key area of focus. Many people think that macrocosm environmentally friendly increases costs. In the past, most of the companies were focused on reducing unit costs. Only later, many companies could do the change and look instead at total landed costs with the on-set of global trade. Some companies also started looking at the usage costs with a piece of equipment- total cost of self- pass on TCO.Sustainability is a tremendous weapon for companies to reduce t heir costs. There are many facets of the supply chain that could be improved by looking at it from a sustainability point of view. The consulting firm A.T. Kearney released an analysis of businesses submitting information to the Carbon Disclosure Project that finds more than half of them along with 25 percent of their suppliers are generating cost savings as a result of adopting sustainable supply practices. It is a major accomplish because they believed that at least half of the carbon emissions attributable to some global companies are generated in their supply chains. The Carbon Disclosure Project 2011 Supply Chain Report, which covers 57 global companies and more than a thousand of their supply chain partners, shows that 86 percent of those companies derived value out of addressing their supply chain processes as part of a corporate sustainability initiative.PepsiCo. Is a very good typeface of this, A.T. Kearney reports that the guild saved more than $60 gazillion in energy -16% reduction per-unit across its beverage plants as the result of managing the carbon associated to those activities. Walter Todd, the vice president of operations for PepsiCo UK and Ireland, where many of these savings took place, saysWith a robust strategy and proven benchmarks in place, PepsiCo set out to engage and educate suppliers about potential opportunities to innovate their receive operations. By providing suppliers access to the same energy assessment tools we use in our own operations, weve seen a mutual return on investment.Pepsi-Co also saved around $44 million by switching from corrugated to reusable plastic shipping containers for bottles.Other major companies have also reported signifi finisht savings thanks to a sustainable supply chain strategyDell is saving over $20 million annually as a result of packaging avails. They achieved its goal of becoming carbon neutral by 2008.One of Sherwin-Williams facilities reduced disposal costs from $95,000 to around $39,1 50 in less than two old age through source reduction, refurbishment of metal containers, and recovery of fiber and steel.Texas Instruments is saving $8 million per year by reducing its transit packaging cipher for semiconductor business by implementing source reduction, recycling and reusable packaging systems.Raymour Flanigan Furniture has saved more than 15 million pounds of waste after renovating a building to serve as a recycling center, now they have the capacity to prepare scrap polystyrene, plastic film, and cardboard for market.Commonwealth Edison generated $50 million in financial benefits from managing literals and equipment by taking a lifecycle management approach to drudgery management.Dow Corning saved $2.3 million by using reconditioned steel drums in 1995 and keep 7.8 million pounds of steel. It is interesting to notice how several companies have developed new revenue sources on the waste they used to throw out.If a sustainable supply chain can be developed, mo ney can be saved by not having to dispose harmful by-products, reduce of obsolescence, decrease the spent on scrap and resources spent on complying its regulatory issues. some other key issue that sustainable companies are focusing on is the logistics and transportation of the product. A simple action such as filling the transports as full as possible can represent earthshaking savings Dell has increased its average truck load and worked with UPS to perfect delivery strategies.Multinational company 3M has developed an in advance(p) system to install adjustable decks in trucks. By placing pallets on two levels they were able to reduce the number of daily truckloads by 40% and save around $110 k per year.Sustainability can be profitable. Improvements in transportation efficiency, operations, raw material selection and packaging are all in the top of the list of green sustainable supply chain initiatives.3. Sustainability as a competitive returnGreener supply chain management prac tices represent a competitive advantage thanks to the increasing customer awareness and regulatory norms. Across industries, there is also a shift in the focus of GSCM programs from submission to creating value for customers and shareholders. The implementation of Green Supply Chain initiatives has evolved from strictly a compliance issue into a means of generating value. The following table shows how to create value out of traditional cost compliance, including environmental, safety and health business contributions.More and more companies are using sustainability as a competitive advantage to grow market share within their industry. A green supply chain usually pushes the organization towards an improvement of their products, processes, quality and productivity. It can also be considered as an enabler for innovative decisions and brand differentiation improvement.GE now has an Ecomagination program focused on growing their revenue stream from environmentally friendly products to ar ound 20 billion dollars by 2011. They recognized the opportunity associated with saving the environment. Nowa long time many companies are offering customers environmentally produced power and charging a premium for that offering. The green initiatives also help a company to maintain and enlarge their customer portfolio. Environmental concern and social debt instrument are now considered as an important part of a succesful business strategy. All competitors are under same market force to change their steering and priority towards a more green initiative, therefore, efforts and investments on this area are becoming more and more important. In addition, more countries will enforce importers to import green products to their nations with tax incentives and this will trigger the stakes to do global business. In the same direction, new product development should not be only the function of product design and engineering department it should also include the fully team-work among marketi ng, engineering, procurement, logistics and materials operations in order to find the best solutions, like how to ship the products effectively, how to plug that processes will not generate hazardous wastes and emissions to the environment, what green components can be purchased, what is the optimal packaging size and re-cycle materials to pack each prodcut, etc. In brief, companies have to consider the new product development process as part of the green supply chain strategy. The development, implementation and commitment of green supply strategy are not only to fulfill the customer necessitates but also to meet general publics expectations to improve and enhance the role in social responsibility and environmental concerns. In exchange, the company will gain sustainable competitive advantage in the industry.4. Sustainability and suppliers ManagementOne of the bigger issues facing companies these days is the actions of suppliers. Companies today are being held accountable for env ironmental or social problems created by their suppliers.Corporate buying practices can impact suppliers ability to improve their business conduct. Pressure on cost and efficiency can force suppliers to contravene some of their own standards in order to meet their customers commercial requirements. But as the opposite effect, companies can use their purchasing power to help install best practices in small and medium-sized companies. In fact, the companies that engage their suppliers around these issues constitute one of the most important drivers for spreading corporate green and sustainable principles around the world. Collaboration is the key. Many companies are performing environmental audits or implementing rules of conduct to promise the actions of their suppliers. The most successful green efforts in supply chains are based on the creation of value by sharing with suppliers and subcontractors the intelligence and know-how about environmental and emerging regulatory issues and em erging technologies. Suppliers and customers can strengthen each others performance, share cost of ownership and social license to operate and create a reciprocal value. Supply chain sustainability must be driven by the originating manufacturers that rely on deep tiers of suppliers and vendors for their products. The reported supplier human rights and environmental violations make by Apples suppliers, is an example of the contends that suppliers face in managing or influencing these issues on the ground. Apple recently did the right thing by transparently releasing its Apple Supplier Responsibility 2011 Progress Report, which underscored just how challenging and baffling multi-tiered supply chain management can be.GE and other multi-national companies- including Wal-Mart, Honeywell, Citibank and SABIC Innovative Plastics- have partnered to create the EHS honorary society in Guangdong Chinese province. The objective of this non-profit venture is to create a better trained and capab le workforce of environmental, health and safety professionals and give them the management, implementation and adept knowledge to be able to proactively ensure that real performance is sustainable and integrated fully into the overall business strategy and operating system of a company. Chinese regulatory agencies are also invited to participate as well. The model that GE is using in China offers a positive example of collaborative innovation. One of the main difficulties is the enforcing of supplier sustainability, spceially in growing economies like China or India. Only a small component of suppliers meet the requirements in the codes of conduct- including prole compensation and environmental requirements- of major multinational companies. There are still major challenges related to wages, working hours, overtime compensation, lack of unions and social insurance. One factor contributing to the difficulties is the high presence and mobility of migrant workers.5. Green SCOR model Green SCOR incorporated within the SCOR framework can provide immense help by offering information on best practices, waste disposal process and metrics to increase the success of Green SCOR initiatives. It also provides environmental metrics that can be included in the calculations for optimizing the supply chain. GreenSCOR focuses on the impacts of SCM in each stage of the product life cycle.GreenSCOR integrates best practices and metrics into the entire supply chain planning process. It also enables a systematic study of the supply chain to unearth opportunities for making the supply chain greener.Best practices include collaborating with partners on environmental issues, reducing fuel and energy consumption and minimizing and reusing packaging. It also includes the metrics to measure the effects of greening, including carbon and the environmental footprint, emission costs per unit, energy costs as a percent of production costs, waste produced as a percent of production and return ed products disposed of versus remanufactured. Processes to address waste management, such as how to collect and manage waste produced during production and testing (including scrap and non-conforming product). It also enables more efficient use of resources and increases the visibility of financial and operations benefits of supply chain practices. Lastly, the metrics can be effectively used to monitor the progress an organization is making towards a green supply chain.By implementing this model a company increases the chance of success of any green initiative.6. Challenges when implementing a GSCContrary to what many people could think, making a business sustainability operational within a supply chain is becoming easier, not harder. There is more information available from procurement managers, environmental directors, design engineers, marketing, communication staff and operations managers- among others- and this deffinitely makes a difference when a supply chain decides to go gr een. But still big challenges like the lack of information about the green supply chain practices and the lack of tools to optimize the supply chain with environmental management makes the implementation less easy. With the trend of global sourcing tracking the carbon footprint of finished products can be difficult however, new initiatives have emerged for adopting the practice of requesting a carbon footprint from suppliers.Barriers to global trade because of the increasing environmental regulations, more restrictions on hazardous substances, bigger accent mark on lean manufacturing and increased supplier auditing and verification are creating the critical road toward new supply chain management expectations. The seek for efficiencies in supply chain management and producing products while reducing waste is a vital imperative in a recovering economy.Shareholder value, company valuations and possible mergers and acquisitions are affected by supply chain sustainability. This impacts cash management and liquidity, for example, carbon-intensive sectors may see an increase in the cost of capital. The World Resources Institute is working on the new supply chain and product lifecycle greenhouse gas protocols that will frame the new expectations of value chain sustainability accounting and inform. Increased attention will be paid on conflict minerals, fair labor and other social aspects of sustainability, management of hazardous substances in toys and other consumer products. It is acknowledged by all organizations that the needs of the community are as important as those of other traditional stakeholders.Larger companies are identifying the critical supply chain partners that have the greatest product impact and collaboratively address the environmental and social footprint of their products through the value chain. Consumers will play a leading role behind great supply chain collaboration. Consumer awareness about sustainability demands a more CO2-friendly supply of products and services.Other main challenge is in monitoring sub-supplier sustainability, this has become a hooligan task for companies with complex global supply chains. It is the responsibility of the direct suppliers to ensure that their sub-suppliers acknowledge, understand and accept the companies sustainable requirements. However, when a supply chain is long and complex, ensuring compliance at many thousands of sub-suppliers represents a major challenge. The future of sustainability will inevitably include the sustainability of entire supply chains, not just direct suppliersOne example of this recently has been Dells use of bamboo in its packaging. The company worked to secure Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certification for its entire bamboo supply chain, from forest to manufacturing. The packaging is still a small percentage of Dells overall packaging needs, but it is a start.Another example could be IKEA, according to their sustainability annual report, the company is mo ving in the right direction. Although the company they omit short of its goal of having 30% of its solid wood sourced from verified responsibly managed forests, they are working actively to increase the number, especially in China and Russia. The company has a team of nine forestry specialists who are dedicated to the two countries and is working towards certifying forests which are closer to the production facilities of IKEAs suppliers. IKEA has the goal of having 35% of its solid wood sourced from informed forests by 2012.If companies are not able to manage product compliance such as regulatory norms, they can suffer business interruptions such as product redesigns, delayed market launches, product returns and recalls. Therefore, effective lifecycle management is a key differentiator for short-term as well as long-term to entrance an advantage and stable position in the market.Suuply chain network and logistics optimization is also key when implementing a GSC, inefficient trans portation methods represent a significant part of the ecological problem. It has been illustrated by a recent report that found that as much as 75 per cent of a companys carbon footprint comes from transportation and logistics alone. Transportation management includes load consolidation and route planning to drive cost savings and reduction of environmental impact.Another important challenge is related to establish a reverse logistics network that supports life cycle design and demanufacturing processes. Producers are required to meet specific targets for material recycling and recovery, telling to the total amount of packaging that they have put into the marketplace. This helps to shift the responsibility for collecting packaging and end of life products from local government to producers.Reverse logistics manages the use and disposition of returned goods, improving a companys ability to put returned goods back on the market. Companies implementing reverse logistics processes can dramatically reduce the waste going into landfills and increase opportunities to introduce products to market. Xerox implemented a reverse logistics solution and achieved huge financial benefits of equipment remanufactured and parts reuse amounting representing over $100 million and reduced the waste from landfills.Another important point is the ability to simulate the unpredictable events in the supply chain network flow and evaluate the supply network design frequently. Companies need to work esigning optimum supply chain networks for sustainability incorporating criteria like fuel usage and carbon emissions.Process optimization is another challenge companies should improve the synchronization of production with customer demand and supplier capacity. The main areas of green manufacturing are reduction in energy, water consumption, waste and emissions that are part of manufacturing processes. And the last challenge I will include is the green reporting, measuring and reporting the environmental impact is the first step towards reducing them. There are direct benefits to organizations from measuring and reporting as because it gives a better understanding of the risks and exposure. Globally, sustainability and environmental reporting are becoming one of the most important management concerns due to increasing pressures of code as well as other initiatives. The challenge remains to quantify and report the emission and environmental footprints. It can be a time overpowering and costly process that requires extraction of data from multiple systems and manipulating it to arrive at required reports.7. Findings and conclusionsEconomic activity has an impact on the environment and the society industries need to conmsider this into their business operations and costs. It is becoming critical to measure and manage the environmental and social impact of activities and procesess across the supply chain.Green practices and a sustainable supply chain have become a neces sity due to both regulatory obligations and economic benefits, yes a green supply chain can help a company to discover hidden sources of profitability.Increasingly the companies are giving more importance to sustainability to promote loyalty of customers, who are getting more aware about the socio-ecological implications of businesses.A green sustainable supply chain enables business to improve products, process and supply quality and productivity. It also pushes the company to make innovative decisions that respond to green economy requirements, by doing this, companies gain access to key markets through diverse certifications.By using a model such as GreenSCOR incorporated in SCOR version 9, the chances of success in any green initiatives increases. Some key success factors and reccomendations in the implementation of a green sustainable supply chain were identifiedStakeholders should be actively engaged in the sustainability strategies of the business.Green initiatives should be a ligned with the strategic objectives of the company.GSCM Best Practices should be adopted when implementing a green supply chain.Technology and models such as SCOR should be used to enable the green initiatives. The company should boost its responsiveness to the expectations of the consumer.Green practices should be intentional for minimal environmental impact, focussing the efforts to reduce packaging and in-transit damage when shipping.Planning and inventory management should pay special attention to reducing inventory and identifying optimal distribution solutions.Transportation solutions should be improved by collaboration.Procurement departments should perform lifecycle analysis for choosing products or solutions to minimize environmental impact.Suppliers relationship management should include the fixture monitoring of suppliers and sub-suppliers sustainability.Benefits should be extended to the local community, as starting point.

Gambling Addiction: Compulsive or Pathological Gambling Essay -- Compu

I am very interested in how a person could psychologically and physically feel the guide to gamble. It interests me that a compulsion could turn into physical want and pain if the compulsion isnt fulfilled. This could actually be classified as an addiction, which some concourse would also shed light on it as a disease. People gamble for many different reasons. Some people do it for the excitement in which it will make them feel a release of adrenaline. Another reason why some people do it is because they are very competitive and they want to feel the burst of energy that they would by chance get from beating other players or even the dealer. Another thing that pulls them in would be the risk of it all. They make a high dollar stake and the moments in between that bet being placed and the outcome send a thrill throughout their body, wondering what the outcome will be. Some people believe that if they gamble, they will be able to solve financial issues such as not being able to p ay monthly bills, alimony, child support, foreclosure, etcetera Other people find gambling can be a way that they run from stress and they feel that they dont have the need to worry about lifes issues. With gambling being an addiction, people will make excuses as to why they do it. Gambling is a pile like drinking alcohol. Some people argue that doing any gambling, like drinking any alcohol, is a bad thing and will only use up to problems that will build up and become much worse. Other people argue that doing sensible gambling in moderation, like drinking in moderation, is utterly acceptable and a safe thing to do. They do, however, have some rules that make the sensible gambling seen okay to them. Here are some of the rules. Some people believe that you need to sta... ...es you wish there was something much that you could do to help. It is hard for people to admit to having this problem so there are probably more people out there then we would ever know. Works CitedFoundation , M. H. (2011). Gambling. Hotel Rwanda Essay -- Film Movies History Historical Essays

I decided to surf the internet in search of inspiration, and I engraft it on the mediate.com website. Robert Benjamins article Hotel Rwanda and the Guerrilla Negotiator definitely caught my eyeparticularly since I had checked the DVD out from the library remnant Friday but hadnt yet watched it. Benjamins article piqued my interest enough to do some additional research on Rwanda, and passion was born. patch a colony of Belgium, Rwanda was separated into two tribal groups which many say was based on physical characteristics such as the wideness of the nose the customary Tutsi (majority), and the upper-class Hutu (minority). For many years, the Tutsis were powerful and mistreated the Hutus. In 1962, Rwanda gained its independence from Belgium, the power shifted to the Hutus, many of whom wanted to exact their revenge on the enemy Tutsis. In 1993, Canadian General Romeo Dallaire was put in charge of the United Nations Mission to Rwanda to facilitate implementation of the Arusha peace accords after they were signed by the Hutus and the Tutsis. That mission was derailed when the Hutu presidents plane was shot down by Tutsi rebels. The presidents assassination was the precipitating event of what would be make out known as the genocide in Rwanda. When pack ask me, good listeners, why do I hate all the Tutsi, I sayread our history. The Tutsi werecollaborators for the Belgian colonists, they stole our Hutu land, they whipped us.Now they have come back. We willsquash the infestation.-- ITLM Hutu Power RadioThen, I watched the movie. In a recreation of actual events, we are taken to Kigali, Rwandas capitol, shortly before the 100-day genocide began. Ultimately, at least 800,000 some say over 1,000,000 were killed. Paul Rusesabagina is the central figure of the story and Benjamins designated Guerrilla Negotiator. Rusesabagina managed the exclusive Hotel Des Milles Collines (owned by a Belgian company) and developed a network of powerful allies (including a crooked Hutu army general) plying them with bribes with the hope they would be available should he forever need a favor. A Hutu married to a Tutsi, and the father of three young children, Rusesabagina initially refused to believe the rumors of increasing hostility and brutality against the Tutsis (routinely called cockroaches by the Hutu rebels). When Rusesabagina commode no longe... ...ion has vanished. We need the inter internal community to intervene and help us (to do) justice, and then after doing justice, dialogue. Lobbying the group to invest and volunteer in Africa, Rusesabagina added What Africans need as a whole is not only someone who will come and pay their education but it is also to change the systems in Africa. To help us to change, to find lasting solutions. Africa is ruled by dictators. And those dictators should know that one day they also can be brought to justice. On July 15-17, 2005, the Save Darfur Coalition is promoting a national weekend of prayer and reflection for t he people of Darfur to coincide with legislation being introduced in the U.S. House and Senate.Noting that many delayed intervening in Rwanda in 1994 because they werent sure the killing was genocide, Rusesabagina has stated What is happening in Darfur according to the definition is genocide. Citing the cry initially associated with the Holocaust and now also with Rwanda of never again as the most abused words, Rusesabagina charges When they were saying that in 1994, it was happening again and again and again and again. So, never again to me is not enough.
